Central City Opera presents the Colorado premiere of Billy Budd by Benjamin Britten, a swashbuckling and thought provoking tale of morality and memory. Based on the short novel Billy Budd, Sailor by Herman Melville, the opera chronicles the idealistic title character’s forced enlistment in the British Navy aboard the Indomitable during the Napoleonic Wars and the moral dilemma that ensues over crimes he commits in self defense. Billy Budd pans between rambunctious seafaring charm and stark reflection on class, privilege and power.
